our story
Foundation
City Collective Amsterdam emerged from a shared sense of urgency among creative makers and cultural entrepreneurs in Amsterdam: the need for a collective voice that could engage directly with the city and contribute to shaping its future. From the beginning, CCA developed in dialogue with the municipality, including early involvement and exchange with the Mayor’s office. The collective was formally established in 2021, laying the groundwork for an association rooted in creativity, advocacy, and connection between makers and policymakers.
A period of reflection
In the years that followed, the collective entered a quieter phase. Like much of the cultural sector, CCA was affected by broader societal shifts and the pandemic’s aftermath. While public activity slowed, a core group of members continued to carry the idea forward – refining its purpose, maintaining relationships, and allowing the collective to mature. This period became one of reflection, learning, and fermentation, shaping the foundations needed for a more sustainable and intentional next chapter.
Renewed momentum
In recent years, City Collective Amsterdam has regained momentum, evolving from concept to active platform. The collective has re-engaged publicly through a growing range of initiatives, including meetings at the Mayor’s residence on themes such as accountability and the role of culture in the city, renewed dialogue with policymakers, public-facing programs, participation in Amsterdam Dance Event, book launches, and collaborations across the cultural field. As the collective continues to grow, its story remains open; shaped by its members, the city, and the evolving role of creativity in Amsterdam.
